Therapy comes in many different forms. Our approach is focused on creating a trusting and meaningful relationship with you which allows you a safe space to explore, address, and heal the concerns that brought you to therapy. In the therapy office the atmosphere and conversation are relaxed and unforced. You are encouraged, allowed, and supported in your exploration of self. The length of therapy is determined in a collaborative manner with your therapist.
Therapy with very young children often involves the participation and cooperation of one or both parents or caregivers. For older children and teens, parental or caregiver participation is determined on a case by case basis.
Family therapy involves the collaboration of all family members with the therapist to uncover unhealthy and unwanted patterns of interactions with each other and replace those with interactions which recognize and respect the dignity and worth of each family member.
Group therapy generally has a specific focus for the participating group members. Groups have specific rules about maintaining respect and keeping each member's information confidential. At Family Wellness Center, groups may focus on a variety of topics. Through group therapy, participants find benefit from the validation and support, feedback, and observations that can only come from others in similar situations. Watch our website or Facebook page for specific announcements about different types of groups that are forming, talk to your therapist, or use our email to alert us to your interest in joining a group.
As of January 2018, Dr. Riggs has started a Pre and Post Bariatric therapy group that meets weekly on Tuesday evenings at 6pm. " You are doing the hard work, pre-surgery weight loss, surgery and recovery, and continued dieting. We want to make sure you have the best chance at success both losing and maintaining your weight loss. We all know the mechanics of weight loss – more calories expended than taken in. However, there is more to solving weight issues than just calories. Struggles with weight can be the result of high stress environments, low self-esteem, history of trauma, and many other issues. Our Bariatric Therapy Group is designed to help you address those issues once and for all so that all of your hard work results in a healthier and happier you." Please contact us if you are interested in joining the group.
Therapy with children and teens
Our children are always paying attention to what we say, do, and how we feel, even when we are not at our best. They take their cues, clues, and messages from us about how to be in this world. When the parent(s) is feeling stressed, uncomfortable, or unhappy, children feel it and know it, even when the parent thinks they are doing a great job of covering it up. Problems may arise because children don't have the skills and knowledge to effectively manage their feelings and often teens are lacking these abilities as well. That is why they look to their parents for consistency in direction, routine, and structure which creates feelings of safety and security.
We use a variety of techniques to help the child or teen resolve their feelings and eliminate conflict or other negative behaviors. This may include play therapy, art expression, talk, parent involvement, parent support and education, and therapy for the parent(s) separately. If you have questions, please feel free to talk with us.
Clinical and medical Hypnosis
Clinical or medical hypnosis is a method of helping the patient reach healing and change resources they have that exist below the level of everyday consciousness. Hypnosis allows the patient's unconscious mind to access these resources for their own benefit and has been effectively and safely used to address a wide variety of conditions for decades. And the patient is always in control. The patient cannot be made to perform any "tricks" such as you may have seen with "stage hypnosis" where the person on stage acts like a chicken for example.
Pain Management - Hypnosis can be effective at helping reduce and manage pain without the use of medication or with less medication.
Habit Control - Smoking, eating and / or weight management, or other habitual behaviors.
Phobias and Fears - Do you feel afraid? - to fly? Go to the dentist? Drive? Try something new?
Improve healing outcomes.
Reduce the need for anesthesia.
Improve mental / emotional preparation for procedures.
These are only a few examples of the uses of clinical and medical hypnosis. If you have an issue that is not listed here, please call us so we may discuss it with you. Sessions are recorded so you may listen in the comfort of your own home to repeat the hypnosis session and gain the maximum benefit from each session. Multiple sessions may be required to gain maximum benefit and the benefits can last a lifetime. Hypnosis services are not covered by insurance.
Men’s educational group on relationships
This weekly educational group offering stems from my work with couples and the parents of divorce who have to struggle with not only their own pain of the loss of a relationship, but the pain of their children as well since everyone in the family now has to adapt to the loss of the relationship. Neither partner is completely to blame when a relationship fails. But, when I ask the men in a couples therapy situation what they know about women and how women work, the blank stares I get back are extremely telling. How do you expect to make a relationship work when you don’t understand even the basics of your partner? Developing a healthy relationship requires knowledge and skills applied consistently over the entire course of the relationship. And if we think that our next relationship will be better just because the ex was “crazy”, we better think again. This is not a therapy group, but an educational and skills development group that meets weekly through video conferencing. You can be anywhere and still attend this group as long as you have an internet and/or phone connection. Call or email Kristopher for more information and to sign up.
